Kapan, Armenia - Complete Travel Guide
Top Things to Do in Kapan
Shikahogh State Reserve
This protected area covers over 10,000 hectares of pristine forest and is home to some of Armenia's rarest wildlife, including the endangered Caucasian leopard. The hiking trails wind through ancient beech and oak forests, past hidden waterfalls and up to viewpoints that'll give you a real sense of just how wild this corner of Armenia can be. You might spot wild boar, brown bears, or over 150 bird species if you're patient and quiet.
Tatev Monastery Complex
About an hour's drive from Kapan, this 9th-century monastery perches dramatically on a cliff edge above the Vorotan River gorge. The complex includes several churches, a bell tower, and what was once one of medieval Armenia's most important universities. The setting is absolutely breathtaking, and the monastery itself is remarkably well-preserved considering its age and remote location.
Baghaberd Fortress
These 13th-century fortress ruins sit on a rocky outcrop about 20 kilometers from Kapan, offering both historical intrigue and panoramic mountain views. The fortress was once a strategic stronghold controlling trade routes, and while much of it lies in ruins, you can still make out defensive walls, towers, and the layout of what was once an impressive medieval complex. The hike up takes about 30 minutes and rewards you with views across the entire Kapan valley.
Kapan Mining Heritage Sites
Kapan has been a mining center for centuries, and you can still see evidence of both Soviet-era operations and much older workings scattered around the area. The old copper mines and processing facilities offer an interesting glimpse into the industrial history that shaped this region. Some of the Soviet-era infrastructure is genuinely impressive in scale, though much of it now lies abandoned.
Vorotan River Gorge Hiking
The river that carved out this dramatic landscape offers some excellent hiking opportunities, with trails that follow the water through narrow gorges and past small waterfalls. The geology here is fascinating - you'll see exposed rock layers that tell the story of millions of years of mountain-building. Some sections require a bit of scrambling over rocks, but most trails are manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness.
